Bong Hits 4 Jesus

Which is to say: The misogynist, power-obsessed totalitarians who control the current Supreme court have pretty well destroyed the concept of Constitutional Rights in this country. The only thing worse than their religious zeal is their infantile reasoning.

Quote: "While we find no reliable data to measure the phenomenon, it seems unexceptionable to conclude some women come to regret their choice to abort the infant life the once created..." (Majority opinion on the mis-named "partial-birth abortion", p 29). Gotta love it: judicial decision based on ignoring data (and reality)

As to the "bong hits" case, here's a cut from a CNN report.

"The majority opinion written by Roberts agreed with Morse. He said a principal may restrict student speech at a school event when it is reasonably viewed as promoting illegal drug use. Drug abuse by the nation's youth is a serious problem, Roberts said.

Since when does a judge's personal opinion as to the seriousness of a crime carry any weight in a clear First Amendment issue? This is beyond pathetic. To read more of both the majority and dissenting opinions, check out PBS.org

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

-- Theodore Roosevelt, speaking on President Wilson's crackdown on dissent after the U.S. entered W.W.I

Recent changes:

Sept 2008: Started our new Quisisana page. We had a fantastic time up @ Kezar Lake and hope repeat for many years to come.

Coming soon (hmph): a page w/ my code and links related to R, the open source stats&data analysis package.

April 2008: added a page full of cool Excel tricks

. Various links and pointers to all sub-pages are found Here, including pinball, my pseudo-blog /rant, Quisisana pix, Tyler Place pix, cool scientific software, Mac things, and more.

If you found me, you probably have all the other links you need anyway. If you want to know more, or want to correct undoubted errors, send me a note at

Physics Exam

Here's an old exam answer it turns out I saved all these years. I got this from some unknown student's bluebook back when I was a T.A. in the Physics Dept. If you took Physics 3/4 at Brown University back in 78 or 79, this might be from your final exam. Now you're famous :-), so please e-mail me your name and stuff.

The problem statement:

The fifth-order maximum of a grating is missing. (a) What are the possible ratios of the slit width b to the center-to-center slit separation d? (b) If the slit width is, in fact, the *smallest* of the values you found in (a), what other grating maximax are missing?

The answer supplied by the student-whose-name-I've-forgotten:

Suppose that instead of using a diffraction grating you got yourself a chainsaw and cut slits in a sheep. Now the slits would be o the order of 1cm +/1 0.1, because muscle and body tissue i[s] tough and elastic, and couldn't be efficiently opened wider with the saw. As for the separation d, it would be more fun if N > 100 or so. d <= 10cm. The most likely ration of b/d is then 1cm/10cm or 0.1 . It's important that you make the slits' width be a good 1 cm, because sheep are opaque and otherwise no light would get through at all, what with all the guts and wnatnot slipping around, getting in the way. It's best to wear old clothes for these investigations.

And that's about it, folks
